Question Body:

With regard to the Brackengate Transitional Care Facility:

  1. How many patients have been referred to this facility to date in 2023, (b) how many patients are expected to be treated at this facility in the 2023/24 financial year and (c) what has been the effect of this facility on acute hospitals in its operational area?

Answer Body:

  1. As at 30 June 2023, cumulatively, 908 referrals were made to the facility already.
  2. The bed occupancy rate is steadily increasing, and it is projected that the full utilisation of the 128 beds could be reached by 1 September 2023. It is difficult to predict the total cumulative number of patients who will be treated as patients will be admitted and discharged. We will be able to provide the total number of admissions at the end of the financial year as with all other total admissions across the health system.
  3. This facility assists in relieving the pressure on our district hospitals, particularly when it comes to their high admissions to emergency centres and general bed occupancy. It provides intermediate care to medically stable patients who are unable to be discharged but do not require acute care. Brackengate is equipped with a variety of wards, including those pertaining to medical, palliative, rehabilitation and TB healthcare services, supported by social workers and an occupational therapist.
