In respect of operations at the Murraysburg Hospital:

What are the (i) infrastructure challenges that exist at the hospital and (ii) plans to address them and (iii) timelines involved, (b) what (i) is the number and (ii) are the details of the funded posts at the hospital, (c) what (i) is the number and (ii) are the details of the vacancies that exist, (d) what is the detailed breakdown of the vacancies per (i) occupation and (ii) grade and (e)(i) what was the total cost of building the wash bay at the hospital, (ii) what will it be used for and (iii) why is it not in use after so many months after completion?

RESPONSE

(i) infrastructure challenges

Adequate consulting areas or rooms for:

  • Consulting room for doctor
  • Consulting rooms / space visiting clinicians e.g., dietician, occupational therapist, ophthalmology etc. When these professionals visit the facility to consult patients, current staff members must vacate their consulting rooms to accommodate visitors.

Reception and admission on the hospital side: – current space is not adequate to accommodate all the patient folders and does not comply with regulations. The registry also functions as the cashier and an office space.

Waiting area at the clinic – Sheltered waiting area for the clinic.

Tea room / kitchenette for staff: There is no dedicated staff room. The nurse’s station is also used as the staff tearoom.

Reconfiguration of the Emergency Centre: No privacy, no nurses station, very small and cramped.

(ii) plans to address them

There are various small inhouse projects that needs to be completed and that will be planned and implemented by the local workshop. The repair of the floor is a funded project on the corrective maintenance project list for 2023/2024.

 (iii) timelines involved

It is envisaged that a contractor will be appointed before the end of March 2024 to do the projects referred to above.

(i) occupation

2 Professional Nurses and 1 Staff Nurse

Please note that the required qualification for a Professional Nurse is basic R425 or equivalent qualification. This PN must have midwifery as part of their qualification.

(ii) grade

Grade 1, but the grade will depend on the years of work experience of the successful candidate, for instance after 10 years or working experience the incumbent progress from grade 1 to grade 2.

RESPONSE

(i) total cost of building the wash bay

Estimated at R 3.8million

(ii) what will it be used for

Wash bay to be used by EMS and attached to that a storage facility which was constructed for the Murraysburg hospital. The wash bay at Murraysburg base is a legislative requirement in terms of the Western Cape Ambulance Act of 2010. It is being used for the following purpose:

  • Cleaning of vehicles and equipment
  • Safe keeping of medical waste, hazardous material, sharps etc.
  • Safe keeping of dirty linen ready for collection.
  • Storage of medical oxygen

(iii) why is it not in use

The Murraysburg wash-bay is in use since 1st of November 2022. Medical waste, linen and oxygen are stored within the dedicated rooms since the 1st of November. Cleaning of vehicles and equipment occurs on daily bases.
