For each of the CapeNature reserves that were negatively affected by flood damage:What was the estimated loss of income since the June 2023 flooding at the latest date for which information is available, (b) what are the (i) details and (ii) latest estimates of the costs to repair the flood damage and (c) which of the costs or losses incurred are covered by short-term insurance policies?

Answer Body: 
  1. The loss of income since the June 2023 flooding amounts to R397 581.50. This equates to a total of 72 bookings which were refunded as a result of the flooding.
  1. (i) and (ii)
  • Cederberg Wilderness (Algeria, Kliphuis and Bosherberge)

Severe damage to internal roads, low water bridges and campsites. 

Cost of repair = R5 561 634.00

 

  • Jonkershoek Nature Reserve

Severe damage to internal roads (including the Ring Road) limiting access to hiking trails.

Total Estimated Costs = R1 000 000.00

Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve

Damage to internal road network.

Total Estimated Costs – R350 000.00

Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve

Severe damage to internal roads resulting in limited and/or no access to service hiking trail huts, access to Cape Canopy Tours, research and firefighting.

Total Estimated Costs = R15 000 000.00

Gamkaberg Nature Reserve

Damage to access road to the reserve as well as internal road network. – Total Estimated Costs = R300 000.00

Selected Nature Reserves

Minor damages experienced to internal road network

Total Estimated Cost =R2 700 000.00

  1. The entity’s short-term insurance policy will potentially cover the loss of income resulting from refunds processed and damage to the low water bridge and campsites. Internal access roads are not covered under policy.
