With regard to the Kliphoek Campsite in the Cederberg Nature Reserve:

  1. What is the date of the fire that damaged the water supply infrastructure, (b) what is the extent of the damage caused by the fire, (c) why can this damage not be fixed by CapeNature’s internal staff, (d) when was a call for contractors to repair the damage sent out, (e) when is the expected date for (i) repairs to be completed and (ii) the reopening of the campsite and (f) what was the income generated by this campsite in the last financial year during the period corresponding with the period of closure?

Please note that the name of the campsite is Kliphuis, not Kliphoek.

  1. The water supply infrastructure was damaged on 22 January 2023.
  1. The fire burned 115ha of vegetation and caused extensive damage to the water infrastructure consisting of two dams, two Jo-Jo tanks and all the pipes, fitting and connectors.

The damage needs to be repaired by professional engineers in this field to ensure the water flow is correct to reach the staff and tourism facilities through gravitation and is “permanent”.  CapeNature staff were able to temporarily restore water supply to staff accommodation.

  1. The advert was placed onto the Supply Chain Management system at the end of February 2023 and the site briefing with contractors was held on 7 March 2023.
  1. (i) The expected completion date for work is the end of September 2023, which must include a final inspection.

(ii) The expected re-opening date is early-October 2023, after the final inspection.

(f)   An income of R559 013.34 was generated by this campsite in the last financial year during the period corresponding with the period of closure.
