- What is the average waiting time for surgeries at public healthcare facilities in the Western Cape and (b) what is the current (i) surgery backlog and (ii) procedures backlog in the province?
Answer Body:
- We only have waiting times for Hip and Knee joint replacement operations and cannot use this as a proxy for all operation waiting times as patients wait much longer for these two operations than for other operations. The average waiting time for a Total Hip or Knee joint replacement operation is two years and six months.
The current backlog for ALL types of surgery is 72,544 operations.
