Question Body:

With regard to the Rhodes High School chaos as reported in the media:

(a) Who caused the chaos, (b) how many people were injured, (c) what has been the reported damage to school property and (d) what action was taken against the culprits?

Answer Body:

I am the appeal authority in disciplinary cases that result in expulsions, in terms of Section 9, subsection 4 which reads:

A learner or the parent of a learner who has been expelled from a public school may appeal against the decision of the Head of Department to the Member of the Executive Council within 14 days of receiving the notice of expulsion.

As a result, I am greatly limited in what statements I can make to the House in this regard, given that the disciplinary hearings are ongoing.

Given this, I can provide the following information regarding an incident at Rhodes High School on 25 August 2023, as relayed to me by my department:

             (a)    The disruption was allegedly caused by a group of Grade 12 learners.

             (b)    Two

             (c)    Windows in the hallways and glass doors were reportedly damaged.

             (d)    The School Governing Body is currently conducting disciplinary hearings.
