- How many jobs have been created in the Western Cape from international (i) films, (ii) series and (iii) documentaries since 2020 and (b) how much have these projects contributed to the provincial economy?
During 2022/23, the DCAS provided funding to 14 beneficiaries in the film industry, amounting to R777 871. The film industry is a commercial activity concerned with the production and distribution of films. We are aware that the film industry has showed a big growth in the number of productions and jobs created that contribute positively to the Western Cape economy but does not have any data to this effect. Wesgro established a Film and Media Promotion Unit which represents the City of Cape Town and Western Cape region as a film location at annual film and media markets such as the established major market events attached to festivals globally and locally.
It is suggested the City of Cape Town as the issuer of permits for all films, documentaries, series, commercials etc and Wesgro be approached for detail on how much these projects contributed to jobs and the provincial economy.
