Premier
Question by Hon Minnen
With regard to his First Thursdays Initiative:
Since 1 January 2022, (a) how many First Thursday events have been held and (b) approximately how many members of the public have attended these events?
- First Thursday events aim to make the Western Cape Government more accessible to residents who have the opportunity on the first Thursday of every month to raise enquiries, concerns or to bring suggestions to the Premier and his Cabinet. Residents are referred to the relevant management team who provide information, follow-up on complaints or take suggestions under advisement. These valuable engagements reflect the Western Cape Government’s commitment to transparency, accessibility and to work in the best interest of our residents.
Since January 2022, a total of 23 First Thursday events took place both in person and virtually. In 2022, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions on large gatherings, First Thursday events were held on a virtual platform for 11 months.
This included a live one hour broadcast on Bush Radio which was also live streamed on Premier Winde’s Facebook page.
In-person First Thursday events were reinstated in February 2023.
- Between January 2022 and February 2023, First Thursday events held on the virtual platform reached an excess of 20 000 residents per session. Since then, to date, a total of 12 First Thursday in-person events were held with 3 883 persons attending.
