Question by Hon Minnen

(a)  What are the full details of his Department’s e-skills training curriculum offered to residents at the Western Cape’s CapeAccess or E-centres and (b) what effect does this training have on the employment prospects of those who graduate?

Answer Body:

(a) The current free training available to members of the WCG eCentres is in two parts:

Foundational – e-Learner: This is an introduction and progressive steppingstone to ICT skills in general and to prepare the candidate for more advanced ICT courses. Modules are:

            • IT Basics
            • Files & Folders
            • Drawing
            • Word Processing
            • Spreadsheets
            • Presentations
            • Web Browsing & Email

Intermediate – International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL): This is more advanced than the e-Learner course, giving students in-depth knowledge of the following modules:

  • Computer Essentials
  • Online Essentials
  • Word Processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Presentation
  • IT Security

(b) what effect does this training have on the employment prospects of those who graduate?

Enhanced Job Prospects

IT skills significantly enhance job prospects and help meet the demand for skills relevant to the fourth industrial revolution and economic growth.

Rural Development

Access to these skills in disadvantaged and rural areas, where the majority of the WCG’s eCentres are located, is a significant investment in rural development and socio-economic inclusion.

Employer Attractiveness and Marketability

  • Having IT skills and certification makes candidates more attractive to employers and boosts their confidence in applying for competitive jobs in the local market.
  • It allows candidates to apply for diverse career opportunities and achieve faster career progression.

Practical Benefits

  • Training at WCG eCentres enables individuals to complete tasks more efficiently in job situations.
  • Residents gain access to internet facilities, allowing them to search for and apply for jobs at the centre while training.
  • They have immediate access to templates for creating Curriculum Vitae.
  • eCentres sometimes invite government agencies for in person recruitment drives on-site. Awareness is provided on these at training sessions.
  • eCentres serve as a point of access for completing SARS registration online, making them a place for budding entrepreneurs to access resources.

Success Stories

Although we don’t currently track training beneficiaries due to their mobility and the delayed emergence of job opportunities, we record “success stories” based on the services we offer.

The table below indicates a cross-spectrum of recent success stories where WCG eCentre members successfully applied for job opportunities based on free ICT training received at WCG eCentres:
