Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism
In the light of the support provided to 170 smallholder and commercial farmers by the Western Cape’s Department of Agriculture over the past five years:
- What is the success rate of the farmers as it relates to their producing sustainable crops and farm produce;
- whether his Department plans to expand the support to include more farmers; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
- The Department has done an external evaluation on the success rate of land reform projects supported by the WCDoA for the period 2019/20 – 2023/24. The evaluation has 3 dimensions with 39 indicators namely:
- Economic Productivity - 22 indicators,
- Socio-economic - 12 indicators, and
- Environmental – 5 indicators.
Based on these indicators and support from our commodity partners a success rate of 83% was reported over the last 5 years.
- The mandate for land reform is with our national Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD). The WCDoA is responsible for post-settlement support to these land reform beneficiaries. Notwithstanding the limited land available for smallholder farmers in the province and at the local municipal level, our training and capacity-building interventions are cross-cutting for all farmers from a food safety and animal health perspective.
