With regard to the SAPS K9 units:
(a) What is the number of trained dogs estimated to be needed for fully operational K9 units in the province, (b) what is the current number of available trained dogs, (c) what are the steps taken to ensure a full complement of trained dogs, both now and in the future, and (d)(i) how many SAPS K9 units are in the province and (ii) what is the location of each K9 unit?
(a) 64 dogs are needed.
(b) There are currently 71 trained police dogs in the Western Cape.
(c) The procurement of dogs for SAPS is managed through multiple channels. National Head office acquires dogs from service providers listed in the official database. Additionally, sponsors may donate dogs to support SAPS operations. The training and development of these dogs fall under the mandate of National Human Resource Development (HRD), ensuring they are properly prepared for their roles within the organisation.
(d) (i) There are eleven (11) K9 Units in the Western Cape.
