Have your say on the Disaster Management Amendment Bill
As part of its oversight function, the Standing Committee on Local Government of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament will consider the Disaster Management Amendment Bill [B 10B – 2015] (NCOP).
The purpose of the Bill is, among others, to clarify policy focus on rehabilitation and functioning of disaster management centres; to provide for an extended reporting system by organs of state on information regarding occurrences leading to the declarations of disasters, expenditure on response and recovery, actions pertaining to risk reduction and particular problems experienced in dealing with disasters; to strengthen the representation of traditional leaders in national, provincial and municipal disaster management advisory forums; to provide measures to reduce the risk of disaster through adaptation to climate change and developing of early warning mechanisms; and to provide for matters connected therewith.
One of the main purposes of the Bill is to provide local municipalities with a mandate to establish, manage, operate and fund disaster management centres.
Public hearings on this Bill have been scheduled as follows:
- Tuesday, 4 August 2015 from 09:00 in the Banqueting Hall, 71 York Street, George.
- Wednesday, 5 August 2015 from 10:30 in the Dial Rock Hall, Camp Street, Saldanha Bay.
- Monday, 10 August 2015 from 09:00 in the Chamber on the 6th Floor of the Provincial Legislature Building, 7 Wale Street, Cape Town.
Interested persons and organisations are invited to participate in this public hearing.
