Public Hearings on Expropriation Bill

The Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Transport and Public Works will hold a series of public hearings in various towns in the province on the Expropriation Bill [B 4B-2015]. Interested persons and organisations are invited to attend the public hearings and to make written submissions on the bill.

The bill is a proposed national law that wants to make it possible for the state to acquire private property for a public purpose or in the public interest. The bill is being introduced by the national Minister of Public Works. Expropriation means that, in certain circumstances, the state can take private property for public benefit without the permission of the owner of the property, but fair compensation must be paid to a person whose property is taken. The Minister states that the bill must ensure that expropriation happens in a way that is in line with the Constitution, and that the bill provides for standard procedures for expropriation.

Written submissions must reach the Committee Co-ordinator, Ms Shareen Niekerk, 4th Floor, 7 Wale Street, Cape Town, 8001, by no later than 12:00 on Monday, 18 April.
