Standing Committee to visit schools in Eden District

The Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Education will embark on a visit week to schools in the Eden District from 28 to 31 January.

The visit week is a key mechanism established by the Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP) to achieve its Constitutional oversight mandate within the province. It is intended to ensure that Members of the WCPP, through its Standing Committees, continuously keep abreast of developments and social issues in the province. It also affords the opportunity to undertake oversight visits and interact with communities and institutions in order to assess the needs and challenges they experience.

During engagement sessions with the Western Cape Education Department, the Standing Committee was informed of the increase in learner numbers as a result of the migration of people into the province. This also puts severe fiscal constraints which does not keep up with the pace of the learner increase and inflow into the province.

The following schools will be visited:

28 January         Plettenberg Bay Secondary School

                             Sunridge Primary School, Knysna

                             Thembelitsha Primary School, Knysna

29 January         Percy Mdala High School, Knysna

                             Van Kervel Special School, George

                             Thembaletu Primary School, George

30 January         Park Primary School, Mossel Bay

                             Hillcrest Secondary School, Mossel Bay

31 January         Briefing by the Department of Basic Education and the Western Cape Education Department on comprehensive sexual education as part of life skills education at the York High School hall, George
