Standing Committee on health honours International Nurses Day

During its meeting this morning, the Standing Committee on Health acknowledged the invaluable role of nurses around the world.

“Today, 12 May 2021, as we commemorate International Nurses Day, we remember the invaluable role nurses around the world play as we continue to fight COVID-19 and stringently maintain all other healthcare services with sheer dedication”, says Hon Wendy Philander, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Health.

“Nurses are known to work long, hard hours and take care of the most vulnerable in society. The committee wishes to express its gratitude to every nurse for the quality care patients receive and the invaluable role they play in society every day. Though the first point of call for a nurse is the bedside of his or her patient, the issues they face stretch beyond the in-service point to nutrition, safety and even education on well-being,” adds Hon Philander. “As we practice oversight, we commit to bringing these matters to the committee agenda to better capacitate these workers as a vital part of our system and service in communities. A registered nurse pledges to serve humanity with conscience, dignity, and first consideration to their patients. A noble tradition indeed.”

On this International Nurses Day, the standing committee commends every nurse for dedicating their careers to contributing to the health and well-being of all individuals in our communities, during the COVID-pandemic, and beyond.
