2021 Western Cape Women's Parliament

On Friday, 13 August, at 10:00, the Western Cape Provincial Parliament will host the 2021 Western Cape Women’s Parliament. The theme for this year’s Women’s Parliament is: “Placing the dignity and innate rights of women in the spotlight”.

 

“We are so excited about this year’s event because, apart from participants from all over the Western Cape and South Africa, we also have international participants that will join us. Hon Shandana Gulzar Khan, Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians and Member of the National Parliament of Pakistan, Hon Zainab Gimba, Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Africa Region and Member of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, and Ms Sharon Tomiko Santos, Member of the Washington State Legislatures in the United States will participate in the virtual programme”, says Hon Beverley Schäfer, Deputy Speaker of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament and convenor of the event.

 

The programme of the event will consist of two main parts: a plenary session attended by all the participants, followed by three breakaway groups dealing with specific topics including: the enrolment of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) university programmes; the gender remuneration gap; and gender responsive budgeting. The programme will culminate in a plenary session that will deal with the finalisation and adoption of the resolutions as agreed upon by the participants.
